Highguard - Vesper City Open-World

Vesper City was another fun collaboration with Derek Bentley. I was on the open-world terrain end and Derek was on the architecture and rock kit (since they were meant to mesh seamlessly together). The kit he created was super versatile and super fun to work with - I was able to create a lot of good building configurations from it and we also used it a lot in other different maps with re-skins.


It was another fun map to work on with the larger macro storytelling elements with the overhanging rock ceiling that hides the city below, the receding sands that exposed the tops of a once-great city and just the Petra-feeling of it all. It was also pleasure going back and forth with Level Design and creating great framing of the amazing POIs Derek and Kristen put together. Working on the set extension/vista for the map was a really fun one as well to give the map epic scale with the rock ceilings extending into the distance. It was another a good example of something I took on, given our smaller art team. Normally that would be something we have a dedicated Vista Artist for on a larger team.


I owned the open-world landscape outside of the main POIs as well as the 'The Royal Gardens' POI by the big waterfalls: landscape creation (sculpting, materials (new and re-used), painting), foliage creation (ground foliage/bushes/trees + tree destruction), world-building, props, vista, 1st pass lighting, POI Level Instance work, etc.


Our environments were a colossal team effort by a relatively small team by AAA standards (we shipped with 7 Environment Artists with no environment outsourcing!). There was a lot new we had to built, but we also had to be efficient and smartly re-use the asset bank that we built up across maps.
